Prototype Driven Development: Keep Your Plan Flexible as You Build with AI

October 28, 2026 · 2:30pm – 4:30pm PT (2 hours)
Online workshop led by Marcelo Lewin

Most of us were taught to plan everything up front, then build exactly what the plan says. When you’re building products with AI, that’s backwards.

In this live, online workshop, you’ll learn how two methods work together. Spec Driven Development (SDD) gives you the plan: you write down what you’re building and why, before an AI agent writes a line of code. Prototype Driven Development (PDD) keeps that plan honest: you hold it loosely, spin off fast, throwaway prototypes to answer the decisions you can’t make on paper, then fold what you learn back into the spec.

We’ll start with the method: how a spec gives an AI agent something solid to build from, why rigid plans still fail the modern builder, why a prototype is a probe rather than the product, and the core loop that ties it together. Then we’ll build a small app together from scratch using Cody Product Builder, with PDD as the backbone. You’ll see, and do, the whole loop: start with a plan, hit a real decision, spin off a quick prototype to settle it, capture the verdict, and feed it straight back into the build.

You’ll leave having practiced the exact workflow on a real app, with a repeatable method for moving fast without flying blind on your own projects.

Agenda

  1. Spec Driven Development: writing the plan an AI agent can build from
  2. Why rigid plans fail when you build with AI
  3. A prototype is a probe, not the product
  4. The Prototype Driven Development loop and its principles
  5. How SDD and PDD work together on real apps
  6. Hands-on: build a small app from scratch with Cody Product Builder
  7. Hands-on: hit a real decision, prototype it, and feed the verdict back into the spec
  8. Questions and next steps for your own projects

What should I already know?
  • No coding experience needed.
  • This workshop is for domain experts and non-developers who want to build real apps with AI.
What should I set up before the workshop?
  • An AI coding agent installed and working on that computer such as Claude Code, Codex, Antigravity, etc.
  • Cody Product Builder downloaded and set up (it’s free). Reach out if you need any help setting this up.
  • An idea for a small app you’ve been wanting to build (or you can follow the workshop example).
What do I need to join the session?
  • An internet connection — A normal, stable connection is all you need, no special bandwidth required.
  • A web browser — The workshop runs in your browser. Nothing to download or install to join.
  • Speakers or headphones — So you can hear the session.
  • A microphone — Optional. Only if you'd like to ask questions out loud. No camera needed, and you're never on video.
